asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he has issued any recommendations to local authorities concerning the width of pavements; and, if so, what the width is.

My Department's detailed recommendations for the widths of footway to be incorporated in designs for new roads are given in Her Majesty's Stationery Office publication "Roads in Urban Areas". The minimum widths recommended for new construction vary between 6 feet and 15 feet.
