HC Deb 08 May 1973 vol 856 cc87-8W
Mr. Woof

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many children now attend nursery schools in Durham County; and what are the number of new nursery schools and places to be made available in the near future. to be met from the museums' Votes. For this reason it would be misleading to calculate the percentages which the hon. Member requests. Questions about the Ulster Museum should be addressed to the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.

Mr. St. John-Stevas

In January 1972, the latest date for which information is available, 806 full-time pupils and 555 part-time pupils were attending nursery schools and classes and almost 9,000 children under 5 were in other classes in primary schools. A further 240 places in nursery schools and classes have been approved under the urban programme since June 1970 and my right hon. Friend hopes to receive shortly the local education authority's proposals for the expansion of nursery education in 1974–76.
