Mr. Tope

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the latest available figure for the number of homeless people in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Dean

I have been asked to reply.

The number of persons living in temporary accommodation provided by local authority social services departments in Enaland was 20,672 at 31st December 1972.

Figures for the rest of the United King dom are matters for my right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
