HC Deb 22 March 1973 vol 853 c180W

Text of declaration of principle and intent recommended by the Working Party.

"We … (the Confederation of British Industry in Northern Ireland, the Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Northern Ireland Committee of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions) … bearing in mind the vital importance to industry of a fair and equitable society, affirm and declare without reservation our commitment to the principle of full equality in all aspects of employment opportunity, and utterly reject discrimination on any such grounds as religion or politics.

Furthermore, we affirm the duty of employers and management to implement and maintain policies and practices designed to secure equality of employment opportunity, the duty of trade unions and workers to support such policies and faithfully to observe such practices, and the duty of both sides of industry and commerce to agree the necessary procedures through their representatives.

Accordingly, we jointly call upon our members and affiliates, and we urge all other organisations or individuals concerned in any way with employment, not only to endorse this Declaration but to take positive steps to achieve its aims in the interests of social justice and economic prosperity."

The Working Party recommends that the Government's unreserved commitment to the objects of the Declaration should be indicated in the following terms:

"The Government fully subscribes to this Declaration, whose aims it will seek to promote as an employer and in all other aspects of its own activity."
