HC Deb 15 March 1973 vol 852 cc420-1W
Mr. Stratton Mills

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement on the security situation in the Duncairn Gardens area in the light of the representation made by the hon. Member for Belfast, North in his letter of 26th February 1973.

Mr. Peter Mills

The security situation in this area has been particularly difficult in recent months. It has been receiving particularly close attention from the security forces, who have had to break up street disorders; they have been attacked with stones and bottles, and on several occasions have been fired on by terrorists. They have carried out a number of searches to root out the gunmen and have found weapons and made arrests.

I met a delegation led by the local Member of the Stormont Parliament on 2nd March, and my right hon. Friend met a similar delegation on 9th March. My right hon. Friend expressed concern at the situation reported to him and has asked that it should be examined urgently by the security forces; he will be replying to my hon. Friend's letter shortly.
