§ Mr. Hicksasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what estimate she has made of the cost of increasing the teaching force to 570,000 by 1981; and how this estimate compares with the cost of increasing the number of teachers to 510,000 by that date as proposed in the White Paper.
§ Mrs. ThatcherI estimate that the additional training costs involved in raising the teacher force to 570,000 by 1981 instead of 510,000 might be of the order of £200 million, excluding capital, and that the 60,000 additional teachers assumed to be in service in 1981–82 would cost some £100 million more than the annual salary bill of £117 million for a teacher force of 510,000.
