§ 31. Mr. Biggs-Davisonasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, in order to counter terrorism, 395W subversion and illegal immigration, he has studied the identity card system of other member States of the European Economic Community; and whether he will take steps to introduce identity cards for the United Kingdom.
§ Mr. CarlisleThe requirement to carry and produce an identity card exists in only four of the member States of the EEC, and my right hon. Friend is not at present convinced that the introduction of this system, to which many people would take strong exception, would be a significant help in dealing with the matters mentioned by my hon. Friend.
