§ 57. Sir T. Beamishasked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he has now concluded his consideration of the inspector's report on the public inquiry into the proposals for the Lewes Bypass; if it is still his intention that work on this project shall start in the latter half of next year; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. SpeedMy right hon. and learned Friend is disposed to keep to the published proposals, but before making the necessary orders he is today inviting representations about a number of modifications which he is prepared to make and about certain other matters which he wishes to consider further.
Plans illustrating the modification and other possible alterations will be on deposit locally for the next six weeks. A display of the plans illustrating the modifications has been arranged for 29th and 30th June and 2nd July in the Lewes 382W town hall when representatives of the Department and of the county council will be in attendance to explain the modifications and answer questions.
It is expected that this scheme will be ready for a start of work at the turn of the year 1974–75 subject to the satisfactory completion of statutory procedures and availability of funds.
A number of alternatives for the improvement of South Street, including a tunnel, are being examined and draft proposals will be published as soon as possible.
