§ EARL COWLEYasked Her Majesty's Government:
What are their policies on and their attitudes towards a permanent United Nations Peace-keeping Force and a United Nations Disaster Agency.
§ BARONESS TWEEDSMUIR OF BELHELVIEA number of Governments, including Her Majesty's Government, have indicated their willingness in principle, and subject to national commitments, to provide military assistance in various forms to future United Nations peace-keeping operations if any further such operations take place. Her Majesty's Government do not, however, favour the creation of a permanent United Nations force. There is no consensus among United Nations members about the means by which any such force should be commanded, controlled or financed; nor is any Government currently requesting a new peace-keeping operation.
Her Majesty's Government played a leading part in promoting the establishment in 1972 of the Office of the United Nations Disaster Relief Co-ordinator. The Office is financed by the United Nations regular budget to which the United Kingdom is a major contributor. Her 1575WA Majesty's Government gives continuing support to the Disaster Relief Co-ordinator's work.
