HL Deb 21 June 1973 vol 343 c1573WA
LORD AVEBURY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What action they have taken or propose to take about the ill-treatment of 44 British citizens by the Lebanese authorities at Beirut airport on or about April 25, 1973, details of which have been sent to the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs; what report of these incidents has been received from the High Commissioner in Bombay, to whom the full details were given by the victims; and whether they will make a statement.

THE MINISTER OF STATE FOREIGN AND COMMONWEALTH OFFICE (BARONESS TWEEDSMUIR OF BELIIELVIE)

No complaint has been received by Her Majesty's Embassy at Beirut about ill-treatment of any member of this party at the airport. Representations have been made by the party to the Deputy High Commission in Bombay, but these did not include any complaint of ill-treatment. I do not think there is sufficient basis for official intervention with the Lebanese authorilties.
