HL Deb 20 June 1973 vol 343 c1458WA
LORD BARNBY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, having regard to the great interest shown by Parliament in the level of wages paid in the Republic of South Africa, it is now their intention to encourage investigation into wage rates in India or in other of the larger countries of the African continent.

BARONESS TWEEDSMUIR OF BELHELVIE

The investigation being carried out by the Trade and Industry Sub-Committee in another place was decided upon by the Committee itself. Her Majesty's Government have no plans to initiate or encourage any similar investigation. But they have made clear their hope that British companies, wherever they operate, will establish a reputation as good employers and keep abreast of best current practices in respect of the conditions offered to their local staff.

House adjourned at five minutes past eight o'clock.
