HL Deb 15 June 1973 vol 343 c1014WA
LORD O'HAGAN

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What degree of pollution is permissible in the effluent from Burnley sewage works; whether these standards are complied with; and whether it is satisfactory that Burnley sewage works should pollute the river Calder in the thorough way it does now.

THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDERSECRETARY OF STATE, DEPARTMENT OF THE ENVIRONMENT (BARONESS YOUNG)

My right honourable friend the Secretary of State for the Environment understands that the effluent from the major Wood End works complies with Royal Commission standards. The relaxed standards demanded of the Altham works are generally met, but this plant will be closed within two years and its flow diverted to a new plant at Martholme.

House adjourned at twenty-one minutes past one o'clock.
