HC Deb 12 June 1973 vol 857 c277W
Mr. Cordle

asked the Secretary of State for Employment whether, in view of the present shortage of staff in some hotels, he will increase the number of work permits available to foreigners who specifically wish to undertake that sort of work in Great Britain this summer.

Mr. Chichester-Clark

No. A quota of 5,000 work permits for overseas men has been allocated to the hotel and catering industry for 1973. Work permits for women are not restricted numerically.

The purpose of the restrictions on the issue of work permits is to encourage employers to attract and train more workers from the resident labour force and the indications are that this is being achieved.
