HC Deb 12 June 1973 vol 857 c274W
35. Mr. Molloy

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he is satisfied that the staff of the Factory Inspectorate is sufficient in number to carry out their duties.

Mr. Dudley Smith

It is impossible to say that we are satisfied with any particular number for the size of the inspectorate, but this has been frequently reviewed to ensure that there are sufficient inspectors to carry out their duties. The number of inspectors has been increased continually during recent years and on 1st May there were 688, a record number.

A review of the Factory Inspectorate size cannot now be divorced from the wider questions which will have to be considered in the light of the Government's proposals to implement the Robens Report on Safety and Health at Work.
