HC Deb 12 June 1973 vol 857 cc274-5W
38. Mr. Wallace

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if nationals of member States of the EEC are entitled to full benefits of British disabled persons registration including employment with Remploy; and what reciprocal arrangements exist in member States for British nationals classified as disabled.

Mr. Chichester-nark

Yes, EEC nationals are so entitled, although, of course, only severely disabled people can be registered for employment with Remploy or other sheltered work.

Nationals of the United Kingdom are likewise entitled to a wide range of services provided by the other member States of the European Economic Community to help disabled people get and keep suitable employment. But these services, and the statutory definitions of a disabled person, vary considerably from country to country. I am sending the hon. Member a Council of Europe document which summarises the position in Belgium, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
