HC Deb 24 July 1973 vol 860 cc499-500W
Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Employment when he expects to install the reinforced toughened glass barrier at the Willesden exchange; if, in order to keep the counter manned in the interim, he will ask for police protection; what compensation is available for the employee who had 15 stitches as a result of injury at the counter; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Maurice Macmillan

The Property Services Agency, which is responsible for Government Departments' accommodation, does not propose to reinstate the damaged screen at Willesden employment exchange. Instead, complete ceiling height counter-length protection is being provided of poly-carbonate glass in aluminium frame with weld mesh above. Subject to delivery of components, it is anticipated that installation will be completed within the next three to four weeks. Arrangements have been made for the provision of police protection. It is always a matter of regret and of deep concern to me when an officer of my Department suffers an injury as a result of carrying out public duty. The Department will give the officer all the help she needs on the question of compensation for the injuries suffered, which must be primarly a matter between the officer and the person causing the injury although it could become a matter for the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board to consider.
