HC Deb 24 July 1973 vol 860 c327W
37. Mr. William Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many of the children in single-sex schools are in the private sector of education; how many in the public; and how many proposals are currently before her Department for the provision of more such schools.

Mrs. Thatcher

In January 1972, 28 per cent. of the children in single-sex schools in England were in independent or direct grant schools and 72 per cent. were in the maintained sector. There are no proposals under Section 13 of the Education Act 1944 at present before the Department which, if approved, would lead to an increase in the number of single-sex schools.
