Langford-Holtasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will propose changes in the National Health Service in order to reverse the position whereby newly qualified doctors can earn £2,000 and £3,000 a year more in general practice than the salary paid to an established consultant in full-time hospital medicine.
§ Sir K. JosephThe remuneration of doctors and dentists in the health service is a matter in the first place for the Doctors' and Dentists' Review Body. Information on the average net remuneration of general medical practitioners was included in the Review Body's Second Report (Cmnd. 5010, June 1972). This does not support the view that over a career a general practitioner's net earnings after practice expenses are higher than a hospital consultant's earnings.
