HC Deb 24 July 1973 vol 860 cc389-90W
Mr. Deakins

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food from what countries, not being primary producers of meat, meat and meat products have been exported to the United Kingdom in the past 12 months.

Mr. Anthony Stodart

I have nothing to add to the reply given to my hon. Friend the Member for Totnes (Mr. Mawby) on 9th March 1973.—[Vol. 825, c. 216.]

Mr. Deakins

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he is satisfied that adequate safeguards exist in countries, not being primary producers, exporting meat to the United Kingdom, so as to prevent any danger to human or animal health in the United Kingdom.

Mrs. Fenner

Our normal practice is to take unprocessed meat only from countries which are primary producers. At present there is one country which is not the producer of all the meat it sends. We have recently asked for revisions in the safeguards of that country to ensure they are adequate.

Mr. Deakins

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food which countries exporting meat to the United Kingdom in the past 12 months have not been visited by veterinary officials of his Department in the last two years.

Mrs. Fenner

Our policy is to make veterinary visits at least every three years to each of the 29 countries which export fresh meat to the United Kingdom. Canada, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Finland, Italy and Romania have not been visited in the past two years.
