HC Deb 24 July 1973 vol 860 c422W
37. Sir G. de Freitas

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he will seek to amend Article 157 of the Treaty of Rome so as to make it clearer that the members of the Commission are independent of national Governments and that Governments must not seek to influence the decisions of individual members of the Commission, whatever their nationality.

Mr. John Davies

Article 157 of the European Economic Community Treaty already makes it quite clear that members of the Commission are expected to be completely independent in the performance of their duties.
