HC Deb 24 July 1973 vol 860 c332W
Mr. Faulds

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether she will authorise a special Treasury grant towards the purchase by the Brighton Art Gallery of the painting "An Encampment at Brighton", by Francis Wheatley, R.A., which was sold at Sotheby's on 14th April 1973, the export licence for which has been temporarily withheld by the Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art.

Mr. St. John-Stevas

Government assistance with purchases by local collections is normally given, in appropriate cases, through the fund administered by the Victoria and Albert Museum. Special grants are considered only if the amount necessary exceeds the amount which can be found from that fund.
