asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many persons in England and Wales are remanded in custody at the latest available date; and how many have been without trial for more than three months, six months and nine months, respectively.

Mr. Carlisle

On 30th June 1973 there were 2,838 unconvicted persons and 1,938 convicted persons awaiting sentence in prisons and remand centres in England and Wales. Information about the length of time awaiting trial is not readily available but my noble Friend the Minister of State will write to the hon. Member.
