HC Deb 19 July 1973 vol 860 c214W
Mr. Dell

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what sum is paid annually by way of regional employment premium to firms on Merseyside; and whether he can divide that figure by industries.

Mr. Dudley Smith

The total payments of regional employment premium made to firms in the Merseyside Development Area each year since 1967–68 are as follows:

Financial Year Total Payments
1967–68 £6 million
1968–69 £19 million
1969–70 £21 million
1970–71 £20 million
1971–72 £21 million
1972–73 £19 million

A breakdown of these payments by industry is not available and the cost of obtaining this information would be considerable.

Mr. Dell

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what information he has regarding redundancies on Merseyside in 1970, 1971, 1972 and so far during 1973.

Mr. Chichester-Clark

Information on redundancies in the Liverpool travel-to-work area recorded by my Department is as follows:

Year Number of people recorded as due to become redundant
1970 9,460
1971 12,300
1972 7,380
January-June 1973 2,040
