asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the amount of Government subsidy paid to local authorities during the last financial year.

For 1972–73 local authorities in England and Wales received £2,522 million as rate support grant. They were paid an estimated £258 million for housing subsidies and £114 million as grants in aid of capital expenditure on highways and lighting. Details of the remaining Government grants paid in the year are not yet available.
