HC Deb 19 July 1973 vol 860 c211W
Mr. William Price

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he is satisfied that the Foundries (Protective Footwear and Gaiters) Regulations 1971 are preventing accidents.

Mr. Dudley Smith

Since these regulations came into force, the numbers of injuries which they are designed to reduce have begun to decline. The results, however, are less satisfactory than had been expected. I therefore welcome the action taken by the Joint Standing Committee on Health, Safety and Welfare in Foundries to have the problems thoroughly examined.

Mr. William Price

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many notifiable accidents resulting in burns to the feet and ankles occurred in premises subject to the Foundries (Protective Footwear and Gaiters) Regulations 1971 during the first six months of 1973; and what were the comparable figures for each of the last three years.

Mr. Dudley Smith

Information is available only for 1972, when every case notified was investigated. There were 337 such cases. Arrangements have been made for every case notified during the second half of 1973 to be investigated.
