HC Deb 19 July 1973 vol 860 cc207-8W
Dr. David Owen

asked the Minister for the Civil Service, in the period 1962 to 1972, how many high-ranking civil servants joined industry within two years of leaving the Civil Service; and how many of these joined firms with a direct contractual link with the Ministry of Defence or its then equivalent Departments and in which Departments they had previously served within five years of leaving the Civil Service.

Mr. Kenneth Baker

Information on the numbers of applications handled by Departments, and the figures necessary to reply to the second part of the Question, are not available centrally without an excessive expenditure of time and effort. Of those cases where departmental consent is necessary only certain categories have to be referred to the Civil Service Department. Since 1962 there have been referred to the Treasury or Civil Service Department 66 applications from civil servants of under-secretary or equivalent rank and above for permission to take up appointments in all forms of industry and other outside organisations.
