asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will take steps to expedite the building of the extension to the Faculty of Art and Design of the Manchester Polytechnic on the site of the former Cavendish Chapel.

This project is already in the current starts programme approved by my right hon. Friend with the normal expectation that work will begin before 31st March 1974. Consent to the demolition of the Cavendish Chapel, which is a listed building, is a matter for my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment who is aware of the need for an early decision after the public inquiry arranged for 25th July.
