HC Deb 04 July 1973 vol 859 cc145-6W
Mr. Ashley

asked the Attorney-General what steps he has taken to ensure that all battered wives are aware of their legal rights.

The Attorney-General

The Government are giving extensive publicity to the legal aid, advice and assistance schemes by advertising on television, in the national Press and on posters. It is hoped that this advertising campaign will bring to the attention of all those in need of legal help, including wives who have been assaulted by their husbands, whose need for legal assistance, I appreciate, may be very urgent, the legal services which are available to them.

Mr. Ashley

asked the Attorney-General if he will introduce legislation to ensure that injunctions against husbands accused of violence against their wives or children must be heard immediately.

The Attorney-General

The High Court and the county courts already have power to hear applications for urgent injunctions immediately, and applications for temporary injunctions can be heardex parte pending the service of proceedings.
