Mr. Pardee

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) if he will make a statement about the progress of the development by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory of the system of motorway speed control known as RITA;

(2) if he will estimate the cost at 1973 prices of the radio receiver required to be fitted to every vehicle in order to operate the motorway speed control system known as RITA;

(3) if he will estimate the total research and development costs so far spent on the motorway speed control system known as RITA.

This project is part of a larger research programme which has cost approximately £370,000 between April 1970 and March 1973. Experimental work is currently being carried out on the engineering, operational and driver acceptance aspects.
