HC Deb 02 July 1973 vol 859 cc20-1W
42. Mr. Rost

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will examine the business activities in the United Kingdom, including importation and direct sales organisation, of a firm, details of which have been sent to him by the hon. Member for Derbyshire, South-East distributing pornographic material from an overseas address.

Mr. Carlisle

The information submitted consists of a circular sent unsolicited from abroad advertising the sale of pornographic material by post. The Post Office Act 1953 makes it an offence to send or to attempt to send or to procure to be sent by post any indecent or obscene material; the Customs and Excise Act 1952 gives power to seize indecent or obscene materials arriving in this country from abroad. The enforcement of these provisions is a matter for the police or the authorities concerned.
