HC Deb 14 February 1973 vol 850 c366W
Mr. Dormand

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what proportion of the £250 cost per place for pupils attending direct grant schools in England and Wales in 1971–72 was borne by the Exchequer.

Mrs. Thatcher

Grants from the Department of Education and Science to these schools in 1971–72 amounted on average to about £75 a pupil, or 30 per cent. of the total cost. There was also a contributionvia rate support grant towards the fees paid by local education authorities in respect of free places taken up by them.
