§ Mr. Dormandasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what proportion of the £250 cost per place for pupils attending direct grant schools in England and Wales in 1971–72 was borne by the Exchequer.
§ Mrs. ThatcherGrants from the Department of Education and Science to these schools in 1971–72 amounted on average to about £75 a pupil, or 30 per cent. of the total cost. There was also a contributionvia rate support grant towards the fees paid by local education authorities in respect of free places taken up by them.
