HC Deb 14 February 1973 vol 850 cc364-5W
Mr. Edward Taylor

asked the Minister for the Civil Service how many civil servants with salaries in excess of £2,000 per annum were employed in the greater London area and in the rest of Great Britain, respectively, at the most recent date for which figures are available; and if this precise information is not available, if he will give an indication of the percentage of civil servants on higher salaries employed in greater London.

Mr. Kenneth Baker

As information about the salaries of individual civil servants is not held centrally it is not possible to give precise information about the numbers in receipt of salaries in excess of £2,000 per annum. However, it is estimated that in July 1972 there were some 95,000 civil servants in the United Kingdom whose basic pay was above £2,150 per annum—the maximum of the executive officer pay scale—of whom some 38,000 were employed in the Inner and Outer London pay area. This 38,000 represents about 5½ per cent. of the total Civil Service.
