asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will include the island of Bute in the Scottish Islands Fertiliser Grant Scheme.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

This scheme is made under powers in the Congested Districts (Scotland) Act 1897, which are confined to the crofting counties and it does not, therefore, extend to Bute.

The grant is intended to offset the marketing disadvantage of farming in the more distant Scottish islands.
