HL Deb 13 December 1973 vol 347 cc1353-4WA
LORD GARDINER

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What would be the practical effect of their proposal, contained in their publication Equal Opportunities for Men and Women: "Persons employed by charities would be subject to the provisions of the legislation regarding employment. However, it is the intention that the legislation should not affect the objects of charitable trusts."

THE MINISTER OF STATE, HOME OFFICE (VISCOUNT COLVILLE OF CULROSS)

The practical effect of the proposal would be in general that persons employed in the administration of a charity or in carying out its actual charitable purposes would be included in the provisions of the legislation. It is not intended that the legislation should affect the activities of any charity or the purposes for which any charity is or may be established, nor the persons on whom a charity may confer benefits, nor persons who are employed as beneficiaries of a charity (for example, in sheltered workshops for the disabled).
