HC Deb 19 April 1973 vol 855 c183W
Mr. Gurden

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many immigrants are now in Great Britain of Indian, Pakistan and Bangladesh origin, including Ugandan Asians, as compared to the census figures.

Sir K. Joseph

The information so far available from the 1971 census is given in the Advance Analysis and relates to country of birth, not to ethnic group. The census enumerated in Great Britain 322,670 and 139,445 persons who had been born respectively in India and Pakistan (which then included what is now Bangladesh). There will be more figures of the population born in new Commonwealth countries together with estimates of those of new Commonwealth ethnic origin when further information becomes available from the census later this year. About 5,000 persons born in India and Pakistan have died since the census. The Home Office recorded 69,735 citizens of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh and United Kingdom passport holders from East Africa admitted for settlement in this country in the period April 1971 to December 1972.
