HL Deb 18 April 1973 vol 341 c1206WA
LORD MERRIVALE

asked Her Majesty's Government whether any representations have been received from airlines operating between the United Kingdom and Gibraltar on the subject of landing charges at Gibraltar; and, if so, what consideration is being given to such representations.

BARONESS TWEEDSMUIR OF BELHELVIE

In August 1971, representations were received about landing charges at Gibraltar airport based on a comparison with those at nearby Spanish and Portuguese airports. As a result, the Ministry of Defence carried out a comprehensive review of costs of the airport, which is a military airport providing land facilities for civil aircraft; this showed that the cost of providing landing facilities for civil aircraft outstrips the corresponding revenue by a substantial factor.
