§ LORD MERRIVALEasked Her Majesty's Government whether any representations have been received from airlines operating between the United Kingdom and Gibraltar on the subject of landing charges at Gibraltar; and, if so, what consideration is being given to such representations.
§ BARONESS TWEEDSMUIR OF BELHELVIEIn August 1971, representations were received about landing charges at Gibraltar airport based on a comparison with those at nearby Spanish and Portuguese airports. As a result, the Ministry of Defence carried out a comprehensive review of costs of the airport, which is a military airport providing land facilities for civil aircraft; this showed that the cost of providing landing facilities for civil aircraft outstrips the corresponding revenue by a substantial factor.
