Following Lord Shepherd's statement to the House on December 8, 1969, that: "The British Government will support Gibraltar's proposals for about a further 750 housing units in addition to the current housing programme"
- (a) what was the charge to Gibraltar for the Defence Ministry site;
- (b) when was the "go-ahead" given for this additional housing; and
- (c) how many units have so far been completed.
§ BARONESS TWEEDSMUIR OF BELHELVIEThe answers to the matters raised in the noble Lord's Question are as follows:
- (a) £313,725 for the site and an estimated £356,000 to provide Defence services are both being met from British Aid Funds.
1107 - (b) Approval for British Aid expenditure was given in November, 1971, the contract was awarded in April, 1972, and the site became available to the contractors in September, 1972.
- (c) None. The contract provides for completion of the housing estate con-
1108 sisting of 652 housing units by 1976; the first three blocks, consisting of 97 units, should be ready about the end of this year. House adjourned at twelve minutes past six o'clock.
