Mr. Norman Lamont

asked the Minister for the Civil Service on what date a decision was reached about the retirement of the Government's Chief Economic Adviser, Sir Donald MacDougall.

Sir Donald MacDougall reached the normal Civil Service retiring age of 60 in October 1972. He agreed to serve on for a period until a successor could be selected and appointed; my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister announced on 29th March that Sir Kenneth Berrill was to be appointed his successor and would take up the post in the autumn.
