HC Deb 02 April 1973 vol 854 cc25-6W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give a progress report on the success of his kidney transplant card scheme.

Mr. Alison

Since launching the kidney donor card scheme last November about 2½ million explanatory donor cards and 26,000 specially designed dispensers have been distributed. The first phase of the scheme was directed at hospitals and general practitioners, but we are currently seeking the support of the universities, banks, local authorities, Government Departments and other large employers in order to widen the scope of the scheme. The scheme has been well received, but it is too soon to measure its success in terms of its effect on the number of renal transplants carried out.
