HC Deb 26 October 1972 vol 843 cc381-2W
Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the number of persons at present on remand in Northern Ireland for offences allegedly concerning the present disturbances in Northern Ireland; how many have been on remand for periods greater than six months, three months, two months, and one month, respectively; what are the offences for which they are charged; and what steps he is taking to expedite the trial of these alleged offenders.

Mr. David Howell

At 25th October the total number of persons remanded in custody was 267, of whom 166 were on remand pending committal proceedings and 101 were awaiting trial. I will write to the hon. Member shortly with regard to the other statistical information requested.

Exceptional measures to expedite the trial of persons charged with serious indictable offences have already been taken, including extra sittings of the courts.
