HC Deb 26 October 1972 vol 843 cc360-1W
Mr. Geraint Morgan

asked the Minister of State for Defence whether the Government will now remove the anomaly whereby holders of the Military Medal from the First World War are denied the annual gratuity of £20 payable to those who gained this gallantry decoration during the Second World War and thereafter, and authorise the payment of this, or preferably an improved, gratuity to all surviving holders of the Military Medal.

Mr. G. Johnson Smith

The £20 gratuity payable to certain holders of the Military Medal is a one-time lump sum, not an annuity. We have been carrying out a comprehensive review of all the monetary benefits that are payable in connection with the award of various medals. I will write to my hon. Friend and others who have shown an interest in this subject when we have concluded our study.
