asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many back duty cases were completed in the financial years 1970–71 and 1971–72.

For the year to 31st March, 1971 the figures were:

Major cases	9,033
Minor cases	57,000

The corresponding figures for the year to 31st March, 1972 were 11,069 and 78,000 respectively.
