HC Deb 25 October 1972 vol 843 c330W
42 and 43. Mr. Hiley

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) if he will consider routing the proposed Pudsey—Dishforth road through the south and east of Leeds, thereby avoiding the cost of demolishing much domestic and factory property;

(2) what he estimates the cost will be of compensating owners of property if the Pudsey—Dishforth road follows a line through Calverley, Horsforth and Harrogate, as compared with similar costs of diverting the road to the south and east of Leeds.

Mr. Speed

The western corridor, announced on 29th September, was chosen after full consideration of a large number of alternatives, including several to the south and east of Leeds. My right hon. Friend is satisfied that the western corridor offers the best solution to the traffic problems on routes between West Yorkshire and the North-East. The precise alignment of the route has yet to be determined and in consequence the property to be demolished cannot yet be identified.
