asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what are the minimum qualifications re- quired of candidates for admission into the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate; what is the current salary scale for such inspectors; and what are the present numbers.

Mr. Emery

Candidates for appointment as Inspectors of Nuclear Installations are normally required to possess a first or second class honours degree, or equivalent, in science or engineering or to be corporate members of an appropriate professional institution.

The current national salary scale for inspectors is £2,910–£3,760 and the total professional staff of the Inspectorate is 66.
