§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, as a means of strengthening the Government's desire for wage and salary restraint, he will suspend the retrospective salary award to the retiring chairman of the Horserace Betting Levy Board; what this increase is to be; how many increases in cash and percentage in the chairman's salary have been paid since he held this position; and whether he will make a statement.
§ Mr. CarlisleThe answer to the first part of the Question is "No".
In the answer to the second part, it is for the Levy Board to determine the salary of the Chairman, but my right 306W hon. Friend has informed them that he will be prepared to approve an increase to the sum of £10,000 a year.
In answer to the last part, this will be the fourth increase in the Chairman's salary since his appointment was put on a full-time basis in September, 1968. For the details I would refer the hon. Member to the reply which I gave to his Question on 2nd December, 1971.—[Vol. 827, c. 143–6.]
