HC Deb 24 October 1972 vol 843 c219W
Mr. Redmond

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much revenue is currently raised by the taxation of food by purchase tax and selective employment tax on relevant employment; and what were the comparative figures in June, 1970.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

For the current year, the purchase tax yield from taxable foodstuffs and soft drinks is estimated to be of the order of £150 million and the SET element in household expenditure on all food (excluding alcoholic drink) about £25 million. The corresponding figures for 1970–71 are of the order of £150 million and getting on for £50 million respectively.
