Mr. Harold Walker

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will state the minimum qualifications required of candidates for admission into the Factory Inspectorate, the current scale of salaries for factory inspectors, and the present strength of the inspectorate.

Mr. Dudley Smith

The minimum qualifications required for admission into the Factory Inspectorate are a university degree or an equivalent qualification; or a Higher National Certificate and at least three years' works or other relevant experience.

The salary scale for the recruitment grade is £1,310 to £2,301 (national), but satisfactory recruits can normally expect promotion after three or four years to inspector 1B on the scale £2,347 to £3,415.

The present strength of the inspectorate is 691.
