Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he will make a statement about arrangements for local defence and security in Northern Ireland.

Security in Northern Ireland has been and will continue to be the responsibility of the security forces under the operational direction of the General Officer Commanding.

There is ample opportunity in the Ulster Defence Regiment, the Royal Ulster Constabulary and the Royal Ulster Constabulary Reserve for all who wish to contribute to defence and security in Northern Ireland, and I hope that more and more people will come forward to help the security forces in this way.
