asked the Minister of State for Defence whether he will make a statement on operations in Northern Ireland.

The Army's task, as always, is to assist the civil authorities and to help keep the peace. It continues to counter terrorism and prevent inter-communal clashes.

There are currently 21 major units in the infantry rôle deployed in Northern Ireland.
