§ Mr. Deakinsasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs why he will not repeal the European Communities Act and provide for a poll in the United Kingdom on the issue of United Kingdom membership of the European Economic Community on the lines of the poll to be held in Northern Ireland.
§ Mr. John DaviesIt is the long established tradition in this country that decisions of this kind should be taken by the elected representatives of the people in Parliament, and the European Communities Act, 1972, was passed after extensive consideration by Parliament in accordance with normal procedures.
